Philadelphia, PA, November 21, 2023 – The African American Chamber of Commerce of Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware (AACC) is thrilled to announce a groundbreaking initiative addressing Philadelphia’s childcare center crisis. Thanks to the generous support of the William Penn Foundation, the AACC has successfully completed a pioneering study in collaboration with early childhood education (ECE) experts, the Adtigo Group. This pioneering study represents a significant milestone in our ongoing commitment to addressing the challenges faced by minority ECE small business owners and recognizing their vital role in promoting child development, family support, and community economic growth.
Philadelphia is currently grappling with a childcare center crisis, with a 20% decline in licensed centers since 2014, while the demand for childcare remains constant. This shortage burdens parents with astronomical childcare costs, exceeding $1,500 monthly for toddler care. The impact disproportionately affects working families, particularly those with multiple children.
ECE providers are the cornerstone of child development, family stability, and community progress. The pandemic has underscored the fragility of the ECE system, especially among providers of color who face wage disparities and limited growth opportunities.
In collaboration with experts, the AACC is committed to uncovering the root causes of these disparities. The William Penn Foundation’s support empowers this comprehensive analysis, aiming to provide tailored business management and development solutions for black ECE small business owners.
The study revealed that ECE owners desire training and support in business management and development. This will help them to operate their businesses more effectively and efficiently. It will also help them to attract and retain qualified staff.” We aim to equip ECE providers with the tools they need to thrive in an increasingly complex landscape. This is a call to action. Together, we can provide our children with the best start in life,” says Regina A. Hairston, President of the AACC.
The African-American Chamber of Commerce of PA, NJ, and DE (AACC) leads the way for minority-owned businesses in the Delaware Valley and Southeastern Pennsylvania. We foster growth, engage with the community to boost economic conditions, advocate for businesses in government, and facilitate vital partnerships to connect our members with essential resources.
